Upgrading to Ubuntu Edgy (6.10) is a snap

October 26th, 2006 mike Comments off

As a general rule, you just need to replace your current release name (say dapper) with “edgy”.

One way to do it would be:

sudo bash
cd /etc/apt
cp sources.list sources.list.dapper
sed 's/dapper/edgy/g' sources.list > sources.list

Then update apt and update the entire box.

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade

Infosecurity NY a dissapointment

October 26th, 2006 mike Comments off

Some of us penguins traveled to NY this week to meet with some folks who were at the Infosecurity show at the Javits Center. We weren’t really going for the show, but we walked the floor anyway.

It was in a word: boring.

To quote their website “The entire security industry converged at the Jacob Javits Center today to see the latest products and solutions available to the security industry.

Ha!

The entire security industry huh? If that was the entire industry, we’re in some serious trouble.

Am I setting my expectations too high? This was a conference floor full of fluffy marketing and sales people reciting bullet points about “data encryption” and “spyware”.

I guess I’m supposed to whip out my checkbook if you say “spyware” or “encryption”.

Lemme try it here and see if people start sending me money.

  • Spyware
  • Enterprise Grade Spyware Protection
  • Recognized leader in Spyware Protection
  • Super Duper Really Great Incredible Spyware Protection

Those words sure do make my wallet tingle, how ‘bout yours?

Anyway, as is so common these days, this conference gave us uninspiring solutions to known problems.

I KNOW that there are hundreds of companies and people with really interesting solutions to the complex security world. Some of them were probably even represented at this show.

I couldn’t find them because all of the passionate people seemed to stay at home. Everyone with enthusiasm, or dare I say, a clue was missing.

That’s it, I’m off to make “Imapenguin Enterprise Spyware” brochures.

Presentations should be given by experts, not script readers

October 20th, 2006 mike Comments off

I’m currently listening to a “Channel Training” presentation in the comfort of my home (it’s Friday and I have great connectivity to the office). The young lady presenting the product information is clearly reading a script.

It’s not the pauses between page turns that bugs me the most(which are clearly audible), it’s they way she emphasizes the wrong information. It’s clearly something she is either not familiar with, didn’t write herself, or doesn’t understand.

The result:

I’m not really listening.

This information is VERY important for the channel, the vendor, and customers. It should be presented by someone who is intimately familiar with the product and the impact it will have on the installed base.

Friday’s thought of the day:

What image are you projecting in your presentations?

Linux still isn’t my primary desktop

October 17th, 2006 mike Comments off

From 1998 to 2005, various Linux and FreeBSD desktops including KDE, GNOME, Blackbox, etc were my primary desktop. Then in the spring of 2005, my wife bought a Mac. I used it for maybe an hour one night and bought one the next day.

I use Linux for servers exclusively (notice I don’t use OS X for servers), but my trusty Thinkpad which has been Debian, Fedora, Gentoo, and now Ubuntu still sits as second fiddle.

So why can’t a guy at Imapenguin, a longtime Linux user, move back to where he “should be”? It’s pretty simple really, the Mac I use gets out of my way. Never on my Mac do I get “Kernel 2.6.17-xxx update is ready to be installed”, which clobbers my VMWare drivers every time it upgrades.

Can you imagine my mother having to decide if she should update her kernel? Yea, me either. My mom is a smart lady, but she doesn’t know what a kernel is and shouldn’t have to. She uses her computer to do things. She doesn’t use it for the sake of operating a computer.

Come to think of it, I’m as geeky as people get, and I’m in the same boat. Sure I program on my computer, but I don’t actually want to maintain the one I’m developing on. I want it to just work so I can do things like program.

I’m still using a Mac because it always just works. It runs the software I want, (Open Source and otherwise) and generally stays out of my way.
